Those of us who live here in the Southwestern US are familiar with the
special quality of light in each season. There is a fascinating
transition as the vast openness of the desert terrain gives way to the
foothills and mountains, under brilliant blue skies that take on spectacular
hues throughout the day.
When I paint a desert landscape or a traditional architectural piece, I
first become engaged with the landscape, studying the lines and looking at
all the possibilities. I take photos if I am going to paint in the studio,
and sometimes I do quick plein air studies to work from later,
because these allow me to capture a certain character of the light. The
Southwest is my favorite place to study history and create art.
